Accepting the Job

Some general guidelines for accepting a position of employment.  These are only guidelines are not to be deemed as legal, tax or accounting advice -- see the appropriate professional for professional advice in those fields.

nanny job accept1) Get the job offer in writing.

2) Ask (and take notes) about what job duties are most important to them; develop a listing of the things that they value most and use that to schedule your day each day with their children.

3) Find out how you are going to be paid.  The ONLY legal way to be paid by a family for domestic work (where you go to their home) is to receive a payroll check with a W-2 at the end of the year.  See also the IRS site for why you are NOT an Independent Contractor.  We offer a payroll service if the family does not want to do it themselves (it IS a headache!).

4) Find out when you will be paid (how often, what day of the week and for what time period).

5) Get specifics on work hours, work days, extra hours, overnights, vacation time, holiday pay, sick days, personal days, job duties, expectations, performance reviews, wage reviews, etc.

6) Ask about driving duties while on the job and with their children - make certain that you have read the page on Automobile Insurance.

7) Contact PTO and make sure that we have everything we need to process your background check (Fair Creditbabysitting job accept Reporting Act must be on file with us) and references.

8) Prior to starting complete an Employment Agreement with the family (you can download one from our web site here).

9) Keep a daily journal for the family of the things that you do each day and ask for their input.

10) COMMUNICATE with the family on a regular basis - when the parent get home make sure you have time to give them a brief run-down of the day before you head out the door.

11) Contact PTO to let us know how things are going!
