ANIMAL COLLAGE

(Best suited for toddlers and young children.)

Most libraries have collections of old National Geographic (or similar) magazines. They'll usually let you have them at no charge if you ask. I take a couple of magazines with me on sitting assignments, and either the child or I will cut out pictures of the animals. We then paste them onto a large sheet of white paper. Then we say the name of the animal and make the sound the animal might make. Then I print the first letter of the animal's name. Not only are they learning new kinds of animals and the sounds they make, but they're also learning letter recognition and developing their fine motor skills. It also makes a colorful collage to put on the child's wall.

KEEPSAKE

Make a memento to keep forever or to give to grandparents or other family members.  All you need is 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of salt and 3/4 cup of warm water.

1.    Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.  Dough needs to be a good sugar cookie dough consistency.  (If you'd like a finished product with a little more pizzazz, you can add the food coloring of your choice at this stage.)

2.    Roll into about 1 inch thickness.

3.    Cut our heart shapes (or whatever shape you'd like) then imprint with child's hand or foot.

4.    Bake at 325 degrees for about one hour.

5.    Remove from oven when hard.

6.    When cool, you can decorate however you wish.

OSCAR THE GROUCH
You need the containers from old rolls of film.  Remove the top and glue a 1'' green pompom to the top of cylinder, glue 2 moveable eyes and a scrap piece of red felt for the mouth.  Glue the lid to the back of head and you will have Oscar the grouch.

TODDLER FINGER-PAINTING
If you want to let a toddler finger-paint but are worried that those hands might go right into that mouth, use pudding instead. This works especially well when you have an older sibling that enjoys finger-painting and the younger child wants to join in. Set him/her up in a highchair or on a separate side of the table w/ bowls of pudding instead of finger-paints.

Etched Pictures - very easy.
WHAT YOU NEED: Crayons, the brighter the better and definitely a black one, plain white paper, a penny or Popsicle stick.

On the plain white piece of paper take one bright color, start in the top corner, and color a piece of that in a diagonal. Take another color and do the same thing right underneath it etc.. So essentially you are making a rainbow in a diagonal form. After the sheet is completely colored, take the black crayon and color over it. Make sure none of the color is showing. (you should press pretty hard.) After that is done take the penny or Popsicle stick and peel some of the black off in designs that the children want or can do themselves. They will make beautiful pictures that they can give to their parents.
